20th August, 2008. 12:04 am. apparently I am obsessed with the spice box
I was making fun of melskunk for having a collection of a certain kid's toy that is so girly I puke at the thought of them. Apparently I have an equivalent silly obsession though: my spice collection. (I have two drawers full of spices at home, and admittedly I only use about half of them regularly, but you never know when the mood will strike you to throw mace or mahleb into the baking.)
At Kaleidoscope I often cook for a random group of 10 to 20 people who bring even more random ingredients, and one year we had only one spice (chili powder). So, last summer I re-purposed a barbecue tool case, and found a use for all those film canisters I'd been saving, to create a waterproof spice chest.
The only problem at camp was that the canisters fell over in a jumble, so it took 5 minutes to rotate each canister (to see the label on the side) and find the ones I wanted for a particular dish.
So last week I lucked into a 67% Off sale on self-stick Velcro, and lined the bottom and sides of the case with wide strips of the "loops". I put a square of the "hooks" on the bottom of each canister, and re-labelled the spices on the lids. So now they sit upright!
Picture is on Facebook because my non-profit non-advertising open-source gallery has errors today.
(Well there was actually another problem at camp: we ran out of pepper, ginger and cinnamon. Who knows which spices will be popular next year; if I give every spice as big a jar as the cumin, I'll be hauling a Rubbermaid tote just for the condiments, and it might be difficult to get a ride to KG!)

19th August, 2008. 12:09 pm. Yay sleep deprivation!
I have an appointment with a potential housemate, my Scrabble rating is through the roof, and my kitchen is clean. Well, cleaner.
On the down side, I got hungry around midnight and went out for potato chips.
Current mood: groggy.

18th August, 2008. 12:03 am. efforts this weekend
I did all of 23 minutes of contract work this weekend. So much for "working hard" to get the big document finished by Labour Day. I hope I am in the mood for paid work tomorrow!
Unpaid work was the order of the day today, and yesterday. I tackled the scattered documents rescued from my previous office and previous apartment, plus the art & craft supplies. Most of them are now classified, and now there don't seem to be nearly as many. Phew! (Though I avoided _doing_ anything from the to-do pile. Ugh.)
I also went to Arcadia to help deal with their deep-freezer before the move to Arcadia 2.0. I cooked and served a chicken-vegetable-pasta stew, and cooked & froze sweet-and-sour pork with rice. I re-organized the freezer so the residents can find all the partially-used items, and told them not to buy any groceries until after they move! (Someone keeps buying meat on sale. Meanwhile the most active cook in the house has gone mostly vegetarian.)
Plus, I took naps, went for a bike ride, ate tasty cheap Indian food, and read a bit of a book.

15th August, 2008. 11:33 am. Woohoo!
I was scheduled to work at the clinic tomorrow, but I called them this morning to double check that they still needed me. Nope! They're covered. So this will make three weekends off in a row! Oh, the crazy decadence.

14th August, 2008. 11:04 pm. US Government Goading Russia into ANOTHER WAR through the Georgia and South Ossetia Conflict
The mainstream media describes the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia to be initiated by the the Russians and basically negates the historical conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia.
On August 8th, Georgia invaded the capital of South Ossetia. Russia's role in all this is to supportive of it's neighbouring ally - South Ossetia. South Ossetia wants to be independent and Georgia wants to take it over - simple.
Why then would you ask is the main media, telling the public that Russia is an evil invader because the US Government, a known invasive bully, is looking for a big fight by throwing rocks on Russian turf.
Don't be fooled by the battle that begins the WAR.

14th August, 2008. 10:13 pm. HPV Vaccine and deaths....
Is it worth dying to be vaccinated against a type of cancer that only occurs in less than 10 of 100,000 (1)? Cervical cancer is not listed as the top ten cancers and the vaccine is not guaranteed to protect you form cervical cancer - the fine print on the vaccine even indicate that in some circumstance you might increase your chances of getting cancer.
In the US, over 14 women have died as a result of the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine. Why take the chance? At the price $500 (CAN) per a set of 3 shot, Merck is making a killing on Gardasil, up in profits by 63%.
The adverse effects and deaths from Gardasil are not reported by the main media and you can only find them out by searching the US Gov't Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
Incidentally the top 10 cancers affecting the US anyway are:
53.3 Lung and Bronchus 25.4 Prostate 24.4 Breast 17.9 Colon and Rectum 10.6 Pancreas 8.8 Ovary 7.2 Leukemias 7.0 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma 5.1 Liver and IBD 4.4 Urinary Bladder
per 100,000

14th August, 2008. 10:19 pm. Writer's Block: Six-Word Story (real answers this time)
Okay, so my friend suckered me into writing these again.
Off the top of my head:
"Not HORSE!!! I said, 'for a WHORE'!"
"Trade? Your hatchling for our planet?"
"Inside the nest? Just paws and fur."
"Bread Available. Slaves or ammunition only."
"The Lord is my Lamb Vendor..."
"Welcome to the United Soviet States"
"Ante." "My soul, and yours." "Call."
"Clouds mushroomed, to the cockroachs' delight."
"Newsflash! Egyptian hieroglyphics found on moonrocks!"
"Mars attacks! Venus seeks peaceful resolution."
"Dissidence detected. Report for decimation vote."
"Who, me?!! Crazy! We dated once!"
"I miss her. She breathed air."
